Testimonials

We recently rented a reading table and Torah from JBMS, and we had a fantastic experience. The team was friendly, professional, and extremely helpful. They were quick to respond to our emails and went out of their way to accommodate our needs. We couldn't be happier with our experience. The drop-off and pick-up process went smoothly, and we had a pleasant experience working with Aron. We highly recommend their services to anyone. Thank you JBMS for your help in making our day extra special and unforgettable! --H Hebel

Just a brief note to let you know how much we LOVED the service you performed with Kevin. It was truly a magical evening... the setting, the music, the cantor and your wonderful leadership made Kevin’s Bar Mitzvah an event to remember forever. --LR

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the extraordinary experience which was Jordan’s education and preparation for his Bar Mitzvah. You are an amazingly talented, caring and gifted teacher. He simply could not have had better. We will remember this day and the exceptional mentor who made it possible. --BT

We did not have a chance to speak with you after Gabe’s Bar Mitzvah, but we cannot thank you enough for what you have done. Firstly, we hear wonderful feedback on the service itself. So many people were so impressed by the spiritual tone of the service. They found it significant and many said it was the most meaningful Bar Mitzvah they ever attended. Many of our Christian friends learned so much about the traditions and values of the Jewish religion from the service. We invited some Protestant Chaplains from the hospital who knew some Hebrew and loved the teachings from the Torah and joined in kissing the Torah with their prayer books. Secondly, but most importantly, we are delighted with the change it caused in Gabriel. This has made him more confident and more motivated to succeed in school and socially. He realizes, what you knew all along, that if he succeeded in this, that it would spark his confidence in other aspects of his life. He mastered Hebrew so well, that he can master life. It was truly a maturing rite of passage. Thirdly, Gabe has a sense of Jewish identity. With this accomplishment, he has begun to see his Jewish roots as a positive part of his life. Owen, you are a very special human being, with a wonderful God given calling... --H

Our Story

JBMS, the Jewish Bar & Bat Mitzvah Service, was created in 1994 by Jewish educator Owen ‘Mar’ Meldy. ‘Mar’ means ‘Mr’ in Hebrew and is also related to the word for ‘teacher.’ Raised in Los Angeles, Owen lived and worked in Israel, where he graduated the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. After specializing in Jewish Education in Los Angeles, Mar Meldy was put in charge of Bar/Bat Mitzvah training at Stephen S. Wise Temple where he was promoted to Program Director for the entire temple. Mar Meldy created and taught a highly successful spoken Hebrew language program at the University Of Judaism. Realizing that approximately 80% of all Jews in Los Angeles were not affiliated with any organized Jewish institution, temple or synagogue, Owen created JBMS, an independent Jewish educational program devoted to Bar/Bat Mitzvah for every Jew. JBMS serves Los Angeles and the greater Southern California area. The one-time fee is very reasonable, allowing every Jewish family to exercise its birthright of Bar/Bat Mitzvah and fulfill the mitzvah for their children. Since a religiously binding Bar/Bat Mitzvah service requires a Minyan of 10 adults, JBMS is pleased to provide you and your family with a beautiful and meaningful ceremony conducted in the location of your choice. 'Mar' Meldy's teaching approach conveys the beauty and personal significance of Judaism to the individual. Jewish concepts are presented as life relevant humanistic values that foster the personal development of each Bar or Bat mitzvah's life adventure into adulthood. You are invited to read testimonial letters written by families who have experienced the JBMS Study Program and Religious Service. Please contact us with any questions you may have in making your Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony all that you wish it to be.
